Choosing a Furnace For Your Home

Understanding furnace efficiency levels and what they mean is a big part of choosing the right system for your home and budget.

What does furnace efficiency mean?

Efficiency is sometimes called Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency, or AFUE.  Essentially, a furnace’s AFUE rating is an indicator of how much gas your furnace is using versus how much gas you’re paying for.

What furnace efficiency levels are available?

The two most common efficiency levels these days are 80% and 90%, though you’ll see some 95% efficiency systems on the market, too.

How do I choose which efficiency level is right for me?

The main argument for installing an 80% efficiency furnace is that the initial cost of the furnace itself is significantly cheaper.  Also, if you’re replacing an older furnace, you’ll have to install a new type of vent to suit a 90% efficiency furnace.  While the vent used for 90% furnaces is made of cheaper PVC, the cost to change an existing vent is more expensive.

On the other hand, a PVC vent can be cheaper in a new home when compared to an 80% vent because of where the vents are installed. Even if you’re leaning toward replacing an older model, it’s worth having a certified HVAC technician check your existing vent to ensure it’s still safe or to advise you of any improvements that need to be made for your new furnace to operate safely.

The biggest argument for installing a 90% efficiency furnace is energy savings, but the initial cost is still significantly higher.  A well-maintained furnace can last as long as 20 years, but the energy savings may take most of that time to recoup the initial cost.
